The bond market set the tone for the first trading day of October. The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.297% during Wednesday's session, a level market data providers describe as the highest in roughly 24 years, and the 30-year climbed to about 5.65%. Long rates have ground higher for weeks even as the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge cooled.
